Kotor Fortress Climb Guide from Cruise Port
1,350 steps to the fortress of St John — the Bay of Kotor spread below like a fjord.
Distance
400 m walk to Sea Gate, then steps from Old Town
Travel time
5–10 min walk to trailhead inside walls
Time needed
Allow 1.5–2.5 hours for the climb and descent
The San Giovanni (St John's) Fortress climbs the mountain behind Kotor Old Town — roughly 1,350 stone steps to ramparts with views over the entire bay. For active cruise passengers this is the signature Kotor experience after the Old Town stroll.
Cruise ships dock at the Port of Kotor, within walking distance of the UNESCO-listed Old Town. Allow 5–10 minutes on foot to the Sea Gate or 2–3 minutes by taxi. The Bay of Kotor arrival is one of Europe's most spectacular — plan to be on deck. Confirm your all-aboard time and keep a 60–90 minute buffer before departure.
The trail starts behind St Tryphon Cathedral inside the walls — buy tickets at the entrance kiosk. Allow 60–90 minutes up and 30–45 minutes down at a moderate pace with photo stops. Minimal shade and full sun exposure make early morning starts essential in July and August.
Not suitable for severe mobility limitations, heart conditions or young children on a hot day. Combine with Old Town walking the same half-day — fortress first while legs are fresh, then coffee on Arms Square below.
